Why do we suffer?

by Nick Andrea

We suffer when we experience ourselves as separate from all that is. This alienation is suffering, is hell. The source of that pain is the self.

When we go beyond the self, we connect to all that is and that is the end of suffering. That is real sanity.

Meditation can help us with this by allowing egoic thoughts to dissolve into the vast expanse and experiencing our connection with everything – other people, trees, the sky, birds, fish, etc. Then we become moved by something deeper, something intuitive. We begin listening and find a flow that is both within us and beyond us. Following that flow we come into harmony with our surroundings, and this harmony is joy, happiness. That, I think, is the purpose of life.
