It is not enough just to repeat an affirmation. You have to believe it. You have to see it as so.
I have known many people in the New Thought movement who are ungrounded and full of shit. They walk around saying things like, “I am abundant,” or, “The magnificent power of the universe manifests through me.” Meanwhile, they’re broke, their car is getting towed away while they’re at church saying these asinine things, and a pigeon just shat on their head.
Well, it’s not that these affirmations aren’t true. No. In fact they are. These people just don’t believe it. They say it but don’t believe it.
You can feel it when you meet somebody like them, can’t you? It’s like they’ve got their heads in the clouds and you could swear that with a puff of breath they’ll just drift away. This is the case because they’ve got no guts; well at least, they’re ignoring them.
Guts are just as much as part of the process as thoughts are. They rule us because what we believe is infinitely more powerful than what we think. If you ever want to know why a person’s experience of life is a certain way don’t listen to what they say. Ask them what they believe.
So, here’s the truth of the universe and everything. It’s 42. No, just kidding. That’s a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reference. The real truth is that you are whole, perfect, and complete, lacking nothing, having everything you need. You are wholly capable of being anything you need to be for life to work. You are It, the One. Neo. You are Neo. Well that’s a Matrix reference. Call yourself whatever you want, but the truth is that you have within your power the ability to create the life you love.
But, in order to access this power you must reach into the core of your being – your guts, where your shadow lives – and BELIEVE that it is so. You have to believe you are abundant, you have to see it as so.
I’m not talking about some pansy, half-assed attempt. I’m talking knowing, just like you know the taste of water or you know the smell of roses. Your guts have to get it. Your guts have to get that God lives inside you, God who can do anything he desires.
Ok so how?
Enter mindfulness. Your soul is the Garden of Eden, and you have to tend it. You can’t grow what you want if the ground is covered with weeds and briars. You’ve got to uproot that shit, first. So grab the hoe. The hoe is awareness. Ask yourself, “Do I really believe this?” Chances are you don’t, otherwise, you wouldn’t need to practice. For example, you may want abundance but you believe you’re not smart or capable enough. You got these beliefs in fifth grade.
Then, aware of this blockage, this limiting belief, you can call its bluff. In the case of abundance, you are an extraordinary being with an extraordinary importance to this world. You have a sacred mission and to complete it you need resources. Public projects need funding!
So, then you can replace this bullshit you’ve been sitting on since you were 10 with the belief that you have a sacred purpose and abundance is natural to that. See? There you’ve fed two birds with one nugget. You’ll have the resources you need and it will be for a sacred reason. What could be better than that? You’re no longer the broke bloke getting his car towed away and washing the bird crap out of his hair. You’re a majestic, royal prince doing wonderful things for the world and having all that he needs.
So, it is critical to embrace one’s shadow in Science of Mind. Thoughts only work in conjunction with beliefs. Understand yourself, first. Then change your thoughts.
